Memorial Service
for Dee Caldwell
The Service of Remembrance and Celebration for the Life of D. (Dee) W. Caldwell will be 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 13, 2007 at the First Congregational Church in Millinocket led by the Reverend Lyn Bradley. The service will be a time of story telling by anyone who would like to speak interspersed with music. Reception following the service will be held at the church.
Dee led annual field trips for church members and had quite a loyal fan club. Dee loved Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park. He did his PhD field work in the Park and used the Park and Katahdin as one study area for his summer Geology Field Courses. He also had numerous research projects in the park. Each of Dee's children made their first ascent of the mountain in a chair on Dee's back. Everyone is invited to spend time on Tuesday in Baxter Park remembering Dee in his favorite haunts.
Dee's widow, Marvin Caldwell, also writes that a new edition of Dee's 1960 bulletin on Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park, which Gary Boone, Bob Marvinney, Tom Weddle and Doug Rankin are currently editing, is in the works. She says that it is very apparent how much we have begun to take for granted the revolution in geologic thinking brought about by the concepts of seafloor spreading, continental drift, and plate tectonics.
